Faoileag an Droch Chladaich – The Gull of the Bad Shore

“Bitheam nam bhàrd
air àrd a’ chuain
san curach sliogarnach
air feadh nan caol
is e air an ùrlar” arsa an seanduine.

Dh’èirmis mi e ‘ndè —
Chaidh a chnàmhan nan crannalach
faisg air a chladach
mun imeachd seo,
bha a shùilean mar reultan
‘san gob faoileige

“Let me be a poet
on the high seas
in a tiny boat made of sea shells
dancing
among the kyles” said the old man

I found him yesterday —
His bones had crushed themselves
close to the shell-covered beach
not far away from here,
his eyes like stars in the beak of a gull.
